Detox: Removing What Doesn’t Belong

Updated: Jan 13

Detoxing has been trending on and off for decades, yet most people still aren’t quite sure what it really means. It can sound extreme, mysterious, or even unnecessary, but detoxification itself is nothing new. It is something your body does every single day without you having to think about it.

Detoxification is simply your body’s way of clearing out what doesn’t belong. You see it in your sweat, your urine, your breath, and your stool, all the natural pathways your body uses to let go of what isn’t serving you. When things are working well, anything that doesn’t support your health eventually finds its way out.

Here is the part we don’t often talk about. Your liver, kidneys, gut, and lymphatic system require a steady supply of nutrients to do their job well. Modern life, with its food quality, stress load, environmental toxins, and constant stimulation, places a much heavier burden on these organs than previous generations ever faced. So while detoxification is natural, it isn’t always optimal.

This is where intentional detox practices can help, but they need to be approached with care. For most people, occasional resets such as a water fast, a juice or bone broth fast, or a 21-day program can be beneficial. But if these leave you feeling worse, foggy, exhausted, or inflamed, that is your body asking for guidance rather than intensity.

In every program I create, detox is one of our core pillars, the "D" in my Defy Your DNA approach. We gently help your body remove what isn’t serving you, whether that is chemicals, heavy metals, microbes, or the everyday waste your system has struggled to process. The changes can be profound. Sometimes the smallest adjustments lighten the load and open the door for true healing. Your body is not trying to fight you. It is communicating. When we clear the path and reduce the burden, your natural healing capacity becomes much more available.

Take a moment today to notice how your body may be asking for a little more support, space, or nourishment. Detox is not about doing more. It is about helping your body return to what it already knows how to do.
